According to data released by the Greek fashion industry association (APR) on October 9th, the Greek textile and clothing industry fared better in the first half of 2013 than in the same period last year.
From January to June 2013, the production of the textile industry was down 10.9 per cent year on year, but it was better than last year, when production was down 17.9 per cent year on year. Similarly, the clothing industry grew 2.4 percent, better than the same period in 2012, when it fell 16.8 percent in the first half of 2012.
During the six-month period, turnover in the textile industry fell 2.2 per cent year on year, while the apparel industry turnover edged up 0.1 per cent, compared with a 17.8 per cent year-on-year decline in 2012.
According to APR data, the turnover of the textile enterprises in Greece was 2.5 per cent year on year and the clothing was 1.7 per cent.
In the domestic market, new orders for textile products rose 0.1 percent year on year, while new orders for clothing increased 2.3 percent year on year.
In terms of exports, Greece's textile exports in January and June 2013 were at the same level as 2012, at 196.2 million euros.
Over the same period, apparel exports rose 1.4 per cent year-on-year to 257 million euros, compared with a 12.4 per cent year-on-year decline in the first half of 2012. Garment export growth, mainly due to the growth of knitted garment exports, increased 5.5 per cent year on year, while the export of woven garments was down 9.8 per cent year on year.
From January to June 2013, Greece's textile imports fell 8.6 percent from a year earlier, compared with a 7.4 percent year-on-year decline in the same period last year.
According to APR, retail sales in Greece were down 5.8 per cent year on year, compared with a 22.6 per cent year-on-year decline in apparel retail sales in 2012. Clothing retail sales have fallen by more than 50 percent since the start of the economic crisis.
